So, what is Caribbean-American Heritage Month?
It’s more than music, flags, and flavorful food—though those are definitely worth celebrating! Caribbean-American Heritage Month, observed every June, is a time to honor the deep cultural legacy and meaningful contributions of people from the Caribbean who have shaped U.S. history, community life, and national progress.

The celebration began in 2006, when President George W. Bush officially declared June as National Caribbean-American Heritage Month after years of advocacy led by the Institute of Caribbean Studies. The goal? To recognize and amplify the presence of Caribbean people in American society—not just as immigrants, but as trailblazers in business, arts, activism, education, and public service.

The Caribbean-American population in the U.S. is more than 13 million, with hundreds of thousands living in the DMV alone. Cities like Washington, DC, Silver Spring, and Baltimore have long been hubs for Caribbean culture, from Haitian churches to Jamaican restaurants to Trinidadian pan yards. This month is an invitation to reflect on those roots and celebrate the vibrant future of the diaspora.
